Don’t you just love when you meet someone that instantly makes you feel right at home when you talk to them? Well that is exactly how I feel about my girl Sarah. From the first “Hello” she made me feel welcome, special and important in the photographic community. She was always there to take my mind off troubles I was having, pull me out of ruts with the banter or “girl talk” and inspire me to move forward. Sarah is one of those true blues….even though we have yet to meet….I already know I will just love her EVEN MORE than I already do. So without further ado…I present this FAB Friday host….Sarah Rachel
1.Tell us something about your business and how long you have been a professional photographer?
I have been in business for eight years. My passion is to photograph weddings for the luxury bride.
2. What is one thing in photography you are eager to try out?
I love to travel and can’t wait till I get the opportunity to do a wedding overseas!
3. Where is your favorite place/scene to shoot?
I absolutely LOVE shooting bridal sessions. Even better if they are on Maui!
4. What is your approach to photography? Define your style?
On a wedding day I would say my style is definitely a combination of artistic portraiture and documentary. I love photographing the glowing bride on her big day. Then during the rest of the day I love to stand back and capture the authentic moments that happen throughout the day.
5. When did you notice you had a passion for photography?
I think I have always loved photography but I found out my true passion two years ago at WPPI. It was my chance to be in front of the camera for a change. When I saw the images on the back of her camera I started crying. I never saw myself as beautiful until that day. That moment ignited the passion I have for making women feel beautiful on their wedding day.
6. Most REWARDING part of your job is?
The most rewarding part of my job is when I hear someone comment that the photographs are beautiful.
7. Lets talk beginner mistakes…when you first started, tell us about one of your first big mistakes and how you recovered/what you learned from it?
Sigh…ok here it goes…if I am being completely honest the biggest thing I messed up on was running my business legally. I started my business when I was 19 and had no idea what it meant to legally register your business and how to pay taxes. Long story short I ended up owing the IRS
A LOT of money.
What I learned from that HUGE mistake?
If I don’t know how to do something myself I am no longer afraid to ask for help or outsource.
8. Best advice you have been given in your photography career?
Invest in education and properly learn your equipment because that is what is going to separate you from the competition.
9. Best advice that you could give someone else that is pursuing a photography career?
I have two pieces of advice. 1) If you are not a legal business that you need to get this straightened ASAP. 2) You should try photographing everything before you decide to specialize. For four years I swore I was never going to photograph people. Looking back I wish I had said yes to weddings earlier in my career.
10. A little bird told us you are getting married yourself this year…spill the deets woman!
Yes, I am getting married!!!! It’s crazy to think about being on the other side of the camera. I am getting married on September 28th 2013 at Historic Yellow Springs. What you really want to know is whom I hired as my photographer. To answer your question I hired Colson Griffith from CA. I met him a few years ago and fell in love with his work. I actually called him the day after I got engaged and asked him what his schedule was because I knew that he was one of my non-negotiables.
WAS THAT NOT AMAZING? Thank you so so much for sharing all of that with us Sarah! You are ah-mazing! To follow Sarah, go here:
