The phrase “living the dream” has always bothered me. Hearing those words strung together actually brings out the inner serial killer in me…and I mean that in the least illegal way. lol
What does “living the dream” mean? Does it mean working a job that not only pays well, but that you love? Swimming in more money than you can hope to spend? Being well traveled? Living in a mansion and having fancy cars? Having a baby after years of infertility? Making a medical discovery? Being famous?
Seriously, what does it mean?!?!
What gets me the most is that, what if THE dream you think you are living is the furthest thing from some else’s version of “living the dream”?
It can be EXHAUSTING to read the social media posts of those you love, admire, and look up to…wanting so badly to be as (rich, beautiful, popular, successful, etc…you fill in the blank here) and hear them boast about how they are “living the dream” and seem as though they really have it all. That they have it made. That their dream, is T.H.E. DREAM to be admired. WRONG!
My mom taught me so many valuable lessons growing up: One of my favorites is that “NOT everyone will like you, and thats ok”. It is still a hard lesson to learn, but its a daily one! One you must work at. One of my other favorites is that “usually those whom boast, brag and gloat, are the ones that have it worse than everyone else.”
I URGE those that read these “living the dream” posts or THINK those around you are “living the dream” by posting only the best of the best of their life; don’t you WASTE ONE MOMENT feeling jealous, sad, left behind, or unworthy. YOUR dream is the only one you should be focused on living. You be the best you, in the best way, at the time that is best for you.
God made us all in his image, but our gift of free will gives us our ability to be unique. If we are all focused on “living T.H.E. dream”….someone else’s version of their dream… we will be wasting this precious gift…and ultimately, the gift of life.
This industry is hard. I have seen the good, bad, ugly, gorgeous, seemingly perfect sides it has to offer. But my most favorite side of being a member of the creative industry is befriending those whom HELP me realize that my dreams are enough. I AM ENOUGH. I am doing just fine. My dreams are just fine. And you know what?
So are you. So are yours.
